EXEMPT: No DEPARTMENT: Public Building Commission REPORTS TO: Foreman POSITION SUMMARY: Entry-level position with required swing shifts. Under limited or no supervision, responsible for operation, testing and preventative maintenance of mechanical systems and equipment in buildings under the authority of the Public Buildings Commission. Monitors facilities, utilities and equipment during non-business hours. Responsible for turning on various utilities in preparation for opening county facilities for public business. _All probationary full-time employees shall reside in St. Clair County by the end of their probationary period, and all employees who are past probationary period or who do not go through probation shall also reside in St. Clair County, Illinois, within six months of date of hire. _ The County mandates that all active employees be Fully Vaccinated against COVID-19. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Operate, test and inspect all machinery and mechanical equipment such as air compressors, boilers, chillers, generators, air handling units, circulating pumps, exhaust fans and other electrical relays and controls. Assist in the maintenance, service, and repair of machinery, equipment and parts using various product, chemicals, and hand and power tools. Monitor operation and performance of computerized facility systems and utilities. Inspect machinery and mechanical equipment for defects. Under supervision, dismantle machines or equipment to gain access to parts; repair, replace or maintain them; repair and replace gauges, valves, filters, belts, pressure regulators, and machinery. Ability to isolate, report and troubleshoot problems and malfunctions of plumbing, electrical and mechanical equipment. Perform general labor duties. Check and clean grounds; plant; fertilize; cut grass, trim edges, trees and bushes; weed and maintain plants and grounds; remove snow and ice as needed. Wear PBC shift operator cell phone at all times while on duty and report incidents, malfunctions, breakdowns and other significant events to designated supervisor or emergency personnel in prompt and timely fashion. Assist Maintenance Workers, carpenters and painters in job duties. Lock and secure buildings, offices and equipment, and monitor lighting and building climate. Clean and maintain assigned areas. Fill in for vacations, sick leave, or whenever necessary for all positions; assist and serve as back up to co-workers. Receive, offload, and deliver paper and other office supplies to office and work areas. Work rotating shifts, weekends and holidays; and serve on-call as assigned. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Trade school certificate in building trades or related field desirable. Two years of experience in the maintenance and operation of machinery and mechanical equipment in an industrial or commercial setting. Two years of experience in mechanical and equipment maintenance.Demonstrated knowledge, ability and/or experience in the fields of mechanics, repair, and maintenance, or equivalent combination of education and experience. NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to read, interpret, and comply with technical, procedural and operation manuals. Ability to work well with the public and county offices. Computer literate. Demonstrated mechanical and electrical knowledge and repair abilities. Experience operating power and manual tools. Ability to follow work safety standards and practices. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating, technical and maintenance instructions, plans, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate orally with foreman and fellow employees. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. The employee sometimes works in high, precarious places and is frequently exposed to heat and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally loud.
