Job Description:

The Residential Treatment Specialist (RTS) provides supervision of and therapeutic programming to a group of residents and assists them in their daily activities and needs according to individual treatment plans, behavior management program and SJBCC policies to be able to assist the children in transition back into a less restrictive environment, such as return home or a foster home setting.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Give direction to, set limits for and provide care for all residents of the Center.
  • Provide for self care of all residents based on developmental needs.
  • Listen actively to each child and provide appropriate feedback relating to each presenting problem, providing individual or group counseling based on each situation.
  • Lead children in observing rules of the Center and address all behavior of the residents in accordance with the Behavioral Management Program and has primary responsibility for deciding on modification and individualization of the treatment process.
  • Participate in and supervise the residents in recreational/educational activities and direct treatment team staff in the implementation of recreational/educational plans.
  • Protect residents to ensure physical and emotional safety.
  • Helps coordinate and transport children to and from all appointments and activities.
  • Primary responsibility for the timely and accurate completion of client documentation as required by the State and the program.
  • Participate in resident group meetings, case reviews, discharge staffing and staff meetings and job-related training.
  • Must successfully complete Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) Training.
  • Restrain and seclude residents when necessary.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: College degree in Human Services or related field or five years experience in the Child Services or related field; demonstrated ability for competent English composition and verbal skills and qualify for Mental Health Professional under Illinois Department of Mental Health Rule 132.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write notes that conform to prescribed style and format.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

COMPUTER SKILLS: Must be able to use Microsoft office and data entry into database.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and sit. Must be able to handle strenuous tasks and physical exertion. Must be able to meet all physical requirements to attend and successfully completed TCI Training and refresher training. Must be able to initiate and/or assist in manual restraint and seclusion of clients.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Able to work evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.

OTHER:Must have vehicle, licensed to drive and auto insurance to transport clients.
