he Residential Activities Coordinator oversees and implements extracurricular and therapeutic recreation programming for youth in residential treatment while coordinating with the agency's Volunteer Coordinator all volunteer-based programming at the residential treatment center. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, coordinating all off-campus outings, activities, and visits for youth in residential treatment; scheduling, managing, and leading community volunteers engaged in programming at the center; ensuring DCFS-mandated community-integration programming requirements are met; tracking volunteer hours and providing to the Volunteer Coordinator; designing and implementing on-campus therapeutic recreation programming; and supervising summer/seasonal therapeutic recreation staff. The Residential Activities coordinator works in close collaboration with Residential Supervisors, Residential Case Managers, the agency's Volunteer Coordinator, Development staff, and Program and Agency Leaders to maintain the highest possible quality of evidence-based, trauma-informed, therapeutic recreation and extracurricular programming.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (other duties may be assigned):

* Designs and implements a therapeutic activities program for youth in residential treatment using best practices and in the fields of therapeutic recreation and psychosocial rehabilitation. * Synthesizes therapeutic approaches from the fields of Social Work, Professional Counseling, Nursing, Psychiatry, Therapeutic Recreation, Education, and related fields. * Facilitates therapeutic activities for youth. * Coaches, teaches, and guides program staff in the proper implementation and facilitation of therapeutic recreation in the clinical milieu. * Schedules and coordinates transportation for youth to-and-from outings, visits, activities and appointments in collaboration with program administrative team members. * Maintains, monitors, and adheres to an annual activities budget. * Responsibly manages youth's personal allowance funds to facilitate activities and outings in the community. * Works closely with the Volunteer Coordinator to identify volunteer needs (programs and projects), assigning and supervising volunteer projects, and tracking volunteer hours. * Researches and seeks government and private funding to operate the therapeutic activities program in collaboration with the agency's Grants Specialist and other appropriate staff. * Facilitates and/or provides therapeutic recreation and activities for youth on special treatment protocols and precautions when those youth are unable to participate in the general activities program. * Links youth with community-based activities, such as camps, sports leagues, scouts, youth groups, etc. to ensure youth are able to successfully re-integrate into the community upon discharge. * Interviews, hires, and supervises summer/seasonal Therapeutic Recreation Aides. * Obtains and maintains certification as a Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) Trainer. * Intervenes in psychiatric emergencies when necessary, to include physical interventions. * Leads TCI training for program staff. * Maintains documentation of client participation and progress toward goals, per the requirements of the youth's funding source, in the agency's service documentation system. * Occasionally transports youth to-and-from activities.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Summer/seasonal Therapeutic Recreation Aides


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: A bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Social Work, Human Services, Education, Juvenile Justice, Nursing, Rehabilitation Services, or a closely related field is required. Candidates with a High School Diploma and a minimum of five years' experience working with youth with psychiatric and/or trauma histories may be considered.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze and interpret common documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondences. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the agency. Ability to effectively document psychosocial rehabilitation services, including client progress toward goals.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and statistics; understand the concept of a budget and basic business finance practices.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

COMPUTER SKILLS: Computer proficiency, particularly in the Microsoft Office Suite, are essential.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and is regularly required to talk and hear. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee will spend time in both an office setting, as well as on the therapeutic milieu and outside engaging in physical activities. The employee will be required to operate an automobile and to transport clients in a passenger vehicle. The employee must have a valid driver license, automobile insurance, and an acceptable driving history as determined by the agency's insurance carrier and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.
