Belleville is a city in St. Clair County, Illinois, coterminous
with the now defunct Belleville Township. The population was 42,034
according to the Census Bureau's 2015 estimates. It is the
eighth-most populated city outside the Chicago Metropolitan Area
and the most populated city south of Springfield in the state of
Illinois. It is the county seat of St. Clair County, and the seat
of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Belleville and the National Shrine
of Our Lady of the Snows. Belleville is the most populated city in
the Metro-East region of the St. Louis Metropolitan Area and in
Southern Illinois. Due to its proximity to Scott Air Force Base,
the population receives a boost from military and federal civilian
personnel, defense contractors, and military retirees.
Scott Air Force Base
Scott Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base in St. Clair
County, Illinois, near Belleville and 25 miles southeast of St
Louis, MO. Scott Field was one of thirty-two Air Service training
camps established after the United States entered World War I in
April 1917. Its airfield is also used by civilian aircraft, with
civilian operations at the base referring to the facility as
MidAmerica St. Louis Airport. MidAmerica has operated as a Joint
Use Airport since beginning operations in November 1997. Allegiant
Air, the only commercial with scheduled flights at the airport,
pulled out of the airport on January 3, 2009, but resumed direct
flights to Orlando in 2012.
REQUIREMENTS (duties include but are not limited to)
- Provide health care to beneficiaries assigned to the Flight
Medicine Clinic.
- Care shall include but not be limited to continuing,
comprehensive health maintenance and medical care. Maintain a
program of comprehensive health, to include preventive medicine,
behavioral sciences, and community health.
- May become the primary care manager for a panel of patients. As
a PCM, the flight medicine provider will be the primary person
responsible for the management of the health and wellness of
his/her assigned patients.
- Examination of patients, formulation differential diagnostic
plans, defines and orders required diagnostic testing.
- Interpretation of examination findings and test results, and
implementation of treatment plans.
- Determine need for consultation and assist in medical care and
treatment provided at the direction of other specialists.
- Approve/disapprove subspecialty referrals.
- Answer patient telephone consults with the assistance of clinic
staff.
- Provide primary and secondary preventive maintenance care.
- Provide appropriate military specific documentation such as
(but not limited to) narrative medical summaries for Medical
Evaluation Boards and medical profile paperwork.
- The Chief, Flight Medicine Clinic will make specific
duties/patient care assignments. All inpatients will be admitted as
per the local MTF instructions.
- Be capable of adequately diagnosing and treating a wide-range
of adult acute and chronic diseases and injuries, including but not
limited to, conditions of the:
- Skin Pulmonary System, Head Gastrointestinal System, Eyes
Musculoskeletal System, Ears Genitourinary System, Nose
Reproductive System, Throat Lymphatic System, Neck Central Nervous
System, Cardiovascular System Endocrine System, Psychiatric and
Behavioral Health.
- Be capable of adequately diagnosing and treating a wide-range
of pediatric (ages 2-18) acute and chronic diseases and injuries,
including but not limited, to conditions of the:
- Skin Pulmonary System, Head Gastrointestinal System, Eyes
Musculoskeletal System, Ears Genitourinary System, Nose
Reproductive System, Throat Lymphatic System, Neck Central Nervous
System, Cardiovascular System Endocrine System, Psychiatric and
Behavioral Health, Well Child Checks, Normal Age Appropriate
Development Assessments.
- Have sufficient experience to be able to adequately perform
medical procedures to include, but not limited to, the following:
- Secure and maintain an adequate airway to include endotracheal
intubation, Cardioversion of life threatening arrhythmias, Simple
minor surgical procedures: punch biopsies, excision of skin
lesions, Simple abscess incision and drainage, Nail trephination,
Sling or swath injuries, Lumbar puncture, Suture simple laceration,
Suture removal.QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO)
from an accredited university.
- Must possess and maintain current Board Certification in
Aerospace Medicine is recommended OR must show proof of completion
of any medical residency program and have a minimum of 3 years
military Flight Surgeon experience.
- Must have 3 years' experience in the last 10 years as a
privileged flight surgeon at a US Military Installation.
- Must have 35 hours per week of direct patient care over the
past twelve (12) months.
- Must possess current unrestricted license to practice in one of
the fifty states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of
Puerto Rico, Guam, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.
- Possess a current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS),
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Life Support
(PALS) as approved by the American Heart Association (AHA).
